6 Facts You Didn’t Know About New President of Baseball Ops, Michael Hill

Happy Birthday to Marlins President of Baseball Operations, Michael Hill!

Mike is beginning his first season as President of Baseball Operations after previously serving as General Manager of the Fish for the past 7 seasons.

Under Hill’s new leadership, the Marlins have revamped their Baseball Ops department, bringing in three of the best scouting executives in baseball and laying the foundation for the new team philosophy: ‘The Marlins Way.’

In honor of his birthday, here are 6 facts about Michael Hill that you may not know:

6 – He’s a Harvard Man

Although born a Cincinnati native, Hill chose to attend Harvard University where he excelled as a two-sport athlete. In addition to playing halfback for the Crimson football team and serving as captain of the baseball team, he was elected Senior Class Marshall (class president). Don’t think Hill slept at all during his four years in Cambridge.

5 – He started as a minor leaguer…

Long before he was building baseball rosters, Hill was trying to make them! Following his time at Harvard, Hill was drafted in the 31st round by the Texas Rangers. He would play two years in the minors for them and then another in the Cincinnati Reds’ system.

Hill carries with him 14 years of front office experience. Before rising to the role of President of Baseball Ops, Hill served as an assistant in the scouting and player development for the Tampa Bay Rays, Director of Player Development for the Colorado Rockies and most recently as General Manager for the Fish. Presently he is the only African American in Major League Baseball to preside over a club’s baseball operations.

3 – “Marlins Ayudan” is in his blood

You can find Hill mentoring kids for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, supporting the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Scholarship Breakfast, and also participating in practically every Marlins Ayudan event possible!

1 – The ‘Marlins Way’

As the new President of Baseball Ops, Mike’s first order of business is to unify the entire organization, from top to bottom. This began in February on the first day of Spring Training when Hill and GM Dan Jennings introduced the ‘Marlins Way’, a new organizational philosophy. From top to bottom, the ‘Marlins Way’ dips into every aspect of training, from how hitters approach the strike zone to being aggressive running the base paths.
